The Maker series product page states the machine requires a water chiller for optimal cooling and stability, and the chiller is not included in the base configuration. The Pronto 45 ships with RDWorks; the LightBurn variants of the Maker series and the Pronto 45 are priced $200 above the same machine without it. Replacement glass tube prices range from $149.99 for a 40W to $1,199.99 for the Yongli A6s 130W on OMTech’s own tube collection.

LightBurn is included with every Thunder and licensed for two computers, and it is what runs the machine. You provide the computer. On the OMTech Maker series and the Pronto 45, RDWorks is what ships and LightBurn is a $200 upgrade.

If bed size is what you are actually buying: at effectively the same money as their 80W Pro Quantum, the Nova Plus 51-60w RF is $13,450 and gives you 51.2 x 35.4 in against their 39.4 x 23.6 in, plus a pass-through that takes material of any length. Fewer watts, considerably more table.

Rated tube life is left out of the table above because the two companies do not state it the same way: we publish about 10,000 hours on the Nova Plus RF tube, while OMTech’s Pro Quantum page states its RF tube “typically lasts 4 to 10+ years.” There is no honest way to put those side by side, so we have not tried. OMTech specifications, pricing, warranty, shipping and support details from omtech.com and OMTech’s own help center, August 2026, pulled from the individual product pages rather than summary pages. The Pro Quantum 80W price shown is the current listed price for the 80W bundle including LightBurn and a roller rotary; OMTech lists a $23,999.99 compare price against both the 60W and the 80W machine. She was not being unfair about it. She told us the machine had been an absolute workhorse and that she did not have a ton of complaints. It just stopped being the right machine for the business she had built, and when it went down she could not produce. As she put it: “if you can’t produce, you can’t pay your bills.” That is the whole argument on this page, in her words instead of ours.

Independent side by side

Two independent reviewers, two different tests.

One ran both machines side by side on the same files. The other had owned an OMTech for years and walked through why he replaced it. Neither review was commissioned by us, and both are linked in the sources at the bottom of this page so you can watch them yourself.

A same-settings production test

  • The reviewer ran the same three jobs, plywood, acrylic and leather, on a 100W OMTech and a 100W Thunder at identical speed and power settings.
  • Total run time across the three jobs: 11 minutes 52 seconds on the OMTech, 7 minutes 38 seconds on the Thunder.
  • The OMTech needed roughly three hours of mirror alignment before the first job. The Thunder ran out of the crate.
  • The Thunder honeycomb bed pins in place so a jig stays square across a run. The OMTech bed slid on its rails.

An owner who replaced his OMTech

  • His Z-axis belt failed. The replacement he was sent was the wrong size, then the wrong tooth pitch, and he was told the correct belt was no longer carried.
  • Three weeks of back and forth, most of it waiting overnight for replies from a support team in a different time zone.
  • The machine shipped without a chiller. He paid close to $700 for one separately.
  • It shipped with RDWorks. His Thunder came with a LightBurn license.

Both reviews are several years old and describe the machines each company sold at the time, not the machines on this page. The side-by-side test ran a Thunder Nova 35 against an OMTech 2440, both 100W; the second review covers a Thunder Nova 63. Where the current product pages have changed, we have used the current pages instead, above. Our own machines have changed too: every Thunder we build today is air cooled, so the external chiller shown in the older review is no longer part of the picture on the Nova Plus or the Titan.

Where it is built, and who backs it

Here are the facts on both companies. Draw your own conclusion.

What OMTech publishes about itself: the company was officially established in 2020, launched its first product in 2014, and was founded in Anaheim, California. Their about page does not state where the machines are manufactured. Their Pro Quantum page says the machine ships from a US warehouse.

What we publish about ourselves: Thunder Laser Global has been building these machines since 2013, and Thunder Laser USA has been selling and supporting them here since 2018. Our machines are built overseas. Parts are stocked in Quitman, Texas, and our technicians work remotely from the East and West coasts so the day is covered across time zones.

Where a machine is built is not a quality guarantee in 2026. There is excellent equipment and there is junk built in America, and the same is true of China. Thunder has been the most premium laser coming out of China for well over a decade.

So ask both companies the same five questions: who builds it, who stocks the parts, who honors the warranty, who answers when it breaks, and how long have you been doing this here. Then buy from whoever gives you the better answers.

Is a Thunder just a more expensive OMTech?
No. They are not the same kind of machine, and the spec sheets say so. Every Thunder CO2 machine runs an RF metal tube and is air cooled, with LightBurn, an overhead camera and infrared autofocus included as standard. Across OMTech’s lineup the lower-priced machines are glass-tube, chiller-cooled and ship with RDWorks, with LightBurn as a $200 upgrade on the Maker series and the Pronto 45. Their RF machine, the Pro Quantum, is closer to ours, which is exactly why we put it head to head above at nearly the same price.
Is an OMTech cheaper?
On the sticker, usually yes, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Their Maker series starts at $2,999.99 and the Pronto 45 at $5,299.99. What we are telling you is that the sticker is not the number that decides it. Add a chiller at $429.99 to $529.99, coolant at $99.99 for two bottles, LightBurn at $200, a $27.99 alignment tool, extra support sessions at $49.99 each and a replacement glass tube at $149.99 to $1,199.99, and then add the production days you lose while you sort it out. At their Pro Quantum tier the two machines are within about one percent of each other on price to begin with.
The Thunder is more up front. Can I finance it?
Yes. Financing is available through Geneva Capital, and your rep can run it alongside the quote so you can see the monthly next to the machine. That is often the honest way to settle this whole comparison: a Thunder that runs faster and needs less from you can pay its own note out of the work it does, where a cheaper machine that is down for two weeks in the fourth quarter costs you the orders as well as the repair. One note on pricing, so there are no surprises: our only discount is a small one for paying by check or bank transfer, and there is no discount for cards or financing.
Do I need a water chiller with a Thunder?
No. Every machine we build is air cooled, so there is no chiller, no pump, no reservoir and no coolant. Nothing to buy, nothing to plumb, nothing to drain, and nothing to freeze if the shop gets cold over a long weekend. The OMTech Maker series product page states the machine requires a water chiller for optimal cooling and stability and does not include one in the base configuration, and the Pronto 45 does not include one in the base machine either. On their RF Pro Quantum their own page is not consistent with itself: the body copy says the RF tube “comes with built-in air cooling,” while the comparison table on the same page lists a built-in water chiller. We have quoted both rather than pick the one that suits us.
Is OMTech faster?
On their published top engraving speed for the Pro Quantum, yes: they list 4,200 mm/s against 1,200 mm/s on the Nova Plus. That is a scanning number, not a cutting number. Cutting speed is a function of wattage, and we sell up to 120W on both the Nova Plus and the Titan. Our Titan runs 3,000 mm/s at 8G acceleration, and the Nova Plus reaches up to 2,000 dpi with the 1.5 inch lens, which is more detail than most shops ever ask for. The most useful comparison is not a spec sheet number, it is your job on your material, which is what the free sample is for.
Will my machine arrive ready to run?
Every Thunder ships nationwide on a liftgate truck, and every buyer gets a free hour of remote training, one on one, walking your own machine with you, plus a knowledge base and a video library. On the OMTech side, their own mirror alignment guide states the machine is typically jostled and shifted in its crate throughout the shipping process, and their help center tells owners to inspect the alignment yourself upon arrival and about weekly during normal operation. That is their guidance, in their words, not our characterization.
Is Thunder Laser made in the USA?
No. Our machines are built overseas and supported here, with parts stocked in Quitman, Texas and US-based technicians working from both coasts. OMTech publishes that it was founded in Anaheim, California and established in 2020, and does not state on its about page where its machines are manufactured. In 2026, where a machine is built is not a quality guarantee. There is excellent equipment and junk built in America, and the same is true of China. How long until I get my machine?
