Connecting To Controller Message on Ruida HMI

Troubleshoot the "Connecting to Controller" message on a Ruida DSP laser control screen, including HMI connector checks, LED diagnostics, and 24VDC voltage testing.

Preface: This article covers some scenarios if you get the "Connecting to Controller" message on the Laser Machine Control Screen. This is not the same procedure if you cannot send files from your computer, though the cause may be the same.

The error message you get when you power the laser up. You will also notice that the laser head does not home to the back left corner. Lights will be on inside the machine and you will still be able to turn the chiller on.

First lets check that the connector is seated in the top of the Ruida DSP controller inside the machine.

Locate your controller:

Check that the HMI connector is in good condition and fully inserted:

If it appears to be disconnected, power off the machine, plug it in and then power back up. If the message clears, then all is good. Otherwise, continue troubleshooting.

Look for LED 14 flashing:

If the controller has some red LED lights on, then lets check for LED 14 to be flashing (LED 11 may also be flashing and at a faster rate). If all the RED led are off, then you can skip this step and go to the next step of checking for DC voltage on the controller.

If you have some red LED's illuminated but LED 14 is not flashing then the controller is dead and needs replacement. You can purchase a replacement here. If the machine is under warranty, be sure to email [email protected]

Checking for 24VDC on the controller:

You will need to have a multimeter and know how to check DC voltage. Each user will have a different meter, so the setup will vary. But in general you will need to put the meter selector dial to a DC voltage setting that can read 24VDC (select the setting that has a value higher than 24 on the meter). Then use the black and red leads to measure the voltage on the power input of the Ruida Controller. You must be on a DC voltage setting, not AC. Some meters will auto detect, but not all. If the leads are reversed when measuring, you will get a negative voltage which is ok. As long as the value is near 24.

If you have 24VDC on that connector but no Red LEDs illuminated on the controller then the controller is dead and needs replacement. You can purchase a replacement here. If the machine is under warranty, be sure to email [email protected]

If you do not have 24V, it could be a few other issues like the 24VDC supply is dead or a wiring issue at the terminal blocks or even a device pulling down the 24VDC, email [email protected] for further guidance.
