Thunder Laser vs Boss Laser

Everything a Boss does, faster and finer, on an air-cooled RF machine with no chiller.

It comes down to four things: the tube, speed, build quality, and support. Every Boss in this class runs a water-cooled glass tube; every Thunder is an air-cooled RF metal tube with a tighter beam that runs faster, holds far finer detail, lasts years longer, and needs no chiller to babysit. Add a build owners call rock solid and US-based support behind a 4.9 Trustpilot record, all in the same price bracket, and you can see why Boss owners keep making the switch. We will prove it on your own material before you spend a dollar.

How the two lines split

Boss was a real CO2 rival. Then the tube moved on.

For years it was Thunder versus Boss, two solid CO2 machines. Then the technology forked. Thunder moved the whole line to air-cooled RF metal tubes, no water, no chiller, longer tube life, and the fine-detail edge a working shop can see. Boss stayed on water-cooled tubes and drifted toward big industrial units, leaving the mid-size machine most shops actually buy behind.

So a Boss owner who wants an RF tube, LightBurn included, and no chiller to maintain can have all three without leaving the price bracket. More than 200 Boss owners in our records have already come to Thunder.

What actually decides it

Four reasons Boss owners move to Thunder.

The tube

Air-cooled RF metal.

Thunder runs an air-cooled RF metal tube: a more stable beam, longer tube life, and finer engraving detail. Boss machines in this class are water-cooled tubes, which is a different technology owners keep telling us they want to leave.

The chiller

Nothing to babysit.

No chiller in any Thunder, so no water to plumb, refill, or watch fail mid-job. On a Boss the chiller is a real part, the CW-5200 lists at $747 on their own store, plus the space and the maintenance.

The software

LightBurn, not RDWorks.

Every Thunder includes LightBurn, the industry-standard software most operators already know, licensed for two computers. Boss ships RDWorks and sells LightBurn separately, so you either learn their software or pay to add the one you wanted.

The ownership

Built well, backed here.

Owners routinely call these machines rock solid, and it shows in the reviews: 4.9 out of 5 across 1,379 Trustpilot ratings and an A+ with the BBB. Backed by US-based support, a deep knowledge base, a full video library, and a free remote training session.

Starting prices are base configurations; the HP-3655 lists 155W and larger beds at a lower sticker because it is a water-cooled tube, where the Titan puts the money into an air-cooled RF metal tube. From a maker who runs both

She owns a Boss and a Thunder. She ran them side by side.

A maker who runs both a Boss LS-1420 and a Thunder Bolt, comparing them side by side.
On the setup

“When you’re dealing with a CO2 laser you need a water chiller, and you’re also going to need an air pump. With the Thunder, the only thing external is this exhaust hose. Everything else is built right in the machine.”

On the engraving

“When it comes to engraving, the Bolt is going to give you a finer line detail. It came out so crispy and clean, I just absolutely love it.”

On owning it

“RF lasers last a lot longer than the glass tubes. They’ll last about 10 years. The CO2 laser tube needs to get replaced about every 2 years, so think about that as an additional cost.”

“

I was ready to buy a Boss machine until I saw a video comparing the Boss to your product.

I’ve been asking for RF for years. I asked for LightBurn for years. I feel like they’re always behind.

The where-it-is-built question

Both are built overseas. Judge how well, and who stands behind it.

Boss is a family-run US company in Sanford, Florida, and markets its machines as assembled in the USA. But like Thunder, the machines themselves are built in China, and assembled here is not the same as built here. Thunder Laser Global has been building machines since 2013, and Thunder Laser USA has been selling and supporting them across the country since 2018.

Where a machine is built is not a quality guarantee in 2026. There is excellent equipment and there is junk built in America, and the same is true overseas. Thunder has been the most premium laser coming out of China for well over a decade. So do not settle it on a flag. Settle it on the questions that actually matter, and ask both companies the same ones:

  • Who designs and builds the machine, and what tube technology does it use?
  • Who stocks the parts, and how fast do they ship?
  • Who honors the warranty, and for how long?
  • Who answers when it needs support, and how long have they been doing it here?
The people behind it

US-based support, coast to coast.

This is the crew that builds the knowledge base and the video library, cuts your sample, works your support ticket, and walks your machine with you on a free remote training session. Real people, based in the US, with techs on both coasts.

  • ✓One free hour of one-on-one remote training, on your own machine
  • ✓Parts stocked in Quitman, Texas, published by part and wattage
  • ✓Two-year machine warranty, 12 months on parts

Why buyers switch

What we hear from Boss owners who move.

1

They wanted an RF tube

Boss stayed on water-cooled tubes in the size class most shops buy. Owners come to Thunder for the air-cooled RF metal tube: a more stable beam, longer life, and detail they can see on the material.

2

Done babysitting a chiller

A water chiller is one more thing to plumb, refill, keep clean, and replace when it fails. Every Thunder is air cooled, so that whole box, and its $747 replacement, is simply gone.

3

Done with RDWorks

Owners are tired of running RDWorks and paying extra for the tool everyone already uses. Every Thunder includes LightBurn, the industry standard, licensed for two computers.

4

Boss left the mid-size class

As Boss moved toward big industrial units, the everyday cut-and-engrave buyer got fewer options. Thunder still builds the versatile mid-size machine a working shop actually buys, from the Bolt to the Nova Plus.

Straight answers

Questions cross-shoppers actually ask.

How does a Thunder compare to a Boss on quality?
Both cut and engrave the same non-metal materials, but a Thunder does it faster and finer. The difference is the tube: Thunder runs an air-cooled RF metal tube where every Boss in this class runs a water-cooled glass tube. The RF tube’s smaller, tighter beam holds finer engraving detail and cleaner edges, lasts years longer, and needs no chiller. The Titan runs 3,000 mm/s at 8G acceleration, and we sell up to 120W on both the Nova Plus and Titan.
Is a Thunder more expensive than a Boss?
We sit in the same price bracket, and at some tiers Boss lists a lower sticker or more watts per dollar, because a water-cooled tube costs less to build than an air-cooled RF one. What your money buys on a Thunder is the RF metal tube, no chiller to own or maintain, LightBurn included, and US-based support. That is the trade, and the fastest way to judge it is to see both on your own material.
Do I need a water chiller with a Thunder?
No. Every Thunder is air cooled, so there is no chiller in any of them, no water to plumb or refill, and nothing to fail mid-job. Every Boss in this comparison is water cooled and ships with, or needs, a chiller. Boss sells its CW-5200 chiller on its own store for $747, which is a part and a maintenance item a Thunder owner never deals with.
Which Thunder matches which Boss?
The Bolt and Nova Plus line up with the Boss EVO and LS series for everyday cut-and-engrave work, and the Nova Plus gives you beds up to 63 inches. The Titan lines up with the Boss HP series on the production floor: premium Iradion RF metal tube, dual cameras, 3,000 mm/s at 8G, built to run hard. Not sure which fits? Send us your material and we will tell you straight.
Does LightBurn work with a Boss?
Boss ships RDWorks and sells LightBurn as an add-on at extra cost, so LightBurn is not included. On a Thunder, LightBurn is included and licensed for two computers, the industry-standard tool most operators already know.
Is Thunder made in the USA?
No. Neither is a Boss. Our machines are built by Thunder Laser Global, which has been building lasers since 2013, and supported across the US by Thunder Laser USA since 2018. Boss markets its machines as assembled in the USA, but the machines themselves are built in China, just like Thunder’s, and assembled here is not the same as built here. In 2026, where a machine is built is not a quality guarantee. Judge the machine, the parts, and the support.
Why should I trust a comparison you wrote?
Fair question. Every Boss fact here comes from Boss’s own site, dated August 2026, and where we could not source something we left it out rather than guess. We even mark the row where Boss wins. We would rather lose the sale than win it on a claim that does not hold up, so the offer is simple: send us your material, we cut and engrave it, and you judge for yourself.
The better buy

Faster, finer CO2 work. Air-cooled RF, no chiller. Proven on your material.

A faster air-cooled RF machine that holds finer detail, with no chiller to babysit, LightBurn included, and US-based support behind it, all in the same price bracket as a Boss. The best way to settle it is on your own material. Send us a few pieces and see.
