Can it be done?
Yes. The short answer is yes — the long answer is that it is time-consuming and expensive.
Does Thunder Laser USA support the swap?
No. Due to the time and complexity of swapping from a glass tube to an RF tube, TLUSA does not support this effort. If you choose to take on this project, you will be doing it on your own with community support only.
TLUSA will provide the firmware you need, and you can source the parts yourself — but that is where support ends. The Thunder Laser knowledge base contains relevant information, but it is not organized as a step-by-step how-to guide for this swap.
Why doesn't TLUSA support the swap?
The swap is not a small undertaking, and TLUSA advises against it. If you need step-by-step instructions or videos to complete it, this project may not be right for you. TLUSA does not plan to support it in the future.
When you factor in the cost of parts, the installation effort, and the likelihood of complications, it is almost always a better financial decision to sell your used machine and purchase a new, factory-built machine with an RF tube and a warranty.
Parts and time involved
To complete this swap you would need, at minimum:
- DSP controller (depending on your machine's vintage, a 1 GHz controller may be required to run Thunder firmware on a Nova Plus)
- Fan board
- RF tube
- RF tube mounts
- Beam expander
- RF tube power supply
- RF tube box (body panel)
- Cabling and wiring
You would likely recoup only a fraction of original prices by selling the glass tube, LPSU, and DSP — making the overall cost of the upgrade very high.
Plan for significant downtime. Swapping the tube box and performing a full tube-to-mirror alignment takes considerable time. Add at least a week of downtime to your estimate.
