DC Excited Glass Tube Laser power supplies are high energy devices that are very volatile, are considered consumables, and they can critically fail. They turn 120v into 30,000v and convert it to DC. Typical LPSUs employ one or more high-voltage (flyback) transformers similar to those found in old CRT TVs that step up the AC voltage, and rectifiers that convert the AC to DC.
High voltage can jump across gaps and short down if it finds an easier path to ground.
There are environmental factors we suspect, like dust and particulates and other foreign matter collecting inside the power supply, etc... but they can break down internally on their own.
And the power quality of the main AC power supplying the machine can be a cause. Brownouts, spikes, high ground to neutral voltage, and more can affect the electronics.
If your machine is mission critical, its a good idea to have a spare.
